Dhaka, Nov 17: Bangladesh’s deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina was on Monday sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal for “crimes against humanity” linked to the widespread anti-government protests that swept the country in July last year.
Hasina, 78, who has been staying in India since her government was ousted on August 5 last year, was convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD), which had earlier declared her a fugitive.
Delivering the ruling before a heavily guarded courtroom in Dhaka, the tribunal said prosecutors had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Hasina orchestrated a deadly crackdown on student-led demonstrations between July 15 and August 15, 2023.
