India on Monday said it has formally taken note of the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh’s verdict against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, adding that it "remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh."
"As a close neighbour, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country. We will always engage constructively with all stakeholders to that end," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
Earlier, Dhaka requested that New Delhi immediately return Hasina, after the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced the former Bangladesh Prime Minister to death over her alleged role in the deadly July crackdown on student protests.
