A teenager has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 17-year-old schoolgirl.

Cameron Cheng, 18, from Newbridge, has been accused of murdering Lainie Williams and the attempted murder of her mum, Rhian Stephens, 38. Both victims suffered stab wounds after being attacked at their home in Cefn Fforest in South Wales on November 13.

Cheng appeared at Newport Magistrates' Court on Monday morning charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a bladed article in a public place. The defendant spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during a brief hearing.

The teenager was remanded into custody as the case was sent to Cardiff Crown Court, where he will appear on Tuesday.
