Three firefighters were injured when a vehicle struck them while they were responding to a separate accident in Uxbridge on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. near Wagg Road and Highway 47, according to local police.
Emergency responders were attending to a collision involving a transport truck and a pickup truck towing a trailer. Investigators believe that dangerous road conditions, attributed to snow and ice, contributed to the initial crash.
While crews were on the scene, a driver lost control of their SUV, colliding with three firefighters and the driver of the transport truck. The SUV then crashed through a fence and into a tree.
A 42-year-old firefighter was airlifted to a hospital in the Toronto area and is currently in critical but stable condition. A 37-year-old fire captain sustained serious injuries and was also taken to a Toronto-area hospital. A 54-year-old fire captain suffered minor injuries and has since been released from a local hospital. The driver of the transport truck was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, while the SUV driver also sustained minor injuries and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.
Authorities closed the roadway for several hours to collect evidence. On Sunday night, police warned residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary due to "extremely hazardous" road conditions.
