A fire at Herr’s Fruit Farm in Lancaster County on Sunday spread four acres beyond the barn where it started with windy conditions pushing the fire faster than usual.

The fire started in a barn around 12:20 p.m. in Manor Township but spread to a cornfield and burned about a four-acre plot of corn stubble, said Blue Rock Fire Station Chief Keith Eshleman. It consumed Herr’s storage containers, and destroyed tents and other retail materials.

Eshleman said the wind caused “significant issues” when firefighters were working to control the blaze.

Columbia Borough Fire Department said they originally responded to a small manure pile in the barn, but two hours later, the fire spread to the field and outbuildings. Multiple other agencies assisted with the fire.
