CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio — West Geauga Schools is moving to establish girls flag football as a club sport this spring, joining a fast-growing movement backed by the NFL, the Cleveland Browns and the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Athletic Director Brandon Stewart told the school board during its Nov. 10 meeting that he wants to begin the three-year club approval process now so the school district is “ready to go” when the sport becomes fully sanctioned.

OHSAA is sponsoring a state championship for flag football this year, and Stewart said official varsity recognition could come as early as 2026 or 2027.
