Police officers and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) personnel on Monday baton-charged protesters and fired tear gas shells and sound grenades after multiple mobs gathered outside Sheikh Hasina’s ancestral home in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi and attempted to tear down what remains of it.
Dhanmondi 32, the residence of Bangladesh’s founding father and Hasina’s father ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has long been a symbolic site. During the August 2024 uprising, large parts of the house were attacked and demolished by protesters.
Mobs returned to the site several times throughout the day on Monday, beginning moments after Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia at the end of a months-long trial that found her guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on last year’s student-led uprising.
