CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an attack on an Orangeburg County deputy during a chase that led to a shooting in a neighboring county.

An Orangeburg County deputy attempted to stop a black Ford Mustang that had been reported as stolen on Saturday, SLED spokesperson Renée Wunderlich said.

The driver refused to stop, leading the deputy on a chase that continued into St. Matthews in Calhoun County, where the driver hit a tree, investigators say.

At that point, SLED agents say the driver got out of the car and attacked the deputy and that during the fight, the driver tried to get into the deputy’s vehicle. The deputy shot and wounded the driver.

Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries, Wunderlich said.
