CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As Border Patrol continues its immigration enforcement efforts in Charlotte , local schools are feeling the impact. Families are making adjustments, some keeping children home while community groups and educators step in to provide support.
Today marked the first school day since Border Patrol agents increased activity in Charlotte. Some families, concerned for their safety, chose not to send their children to class.
Nancy Apolinar of the Latin American Coalition says her organization partners weekly with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) through a mentorship program at Garinger High School.
“We host about 25 students weekly," Apolinar said. "We had one student show up today."
