CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Officer Jerry Gulley received a Department Commendation on Monday for his quick response to an aggravated arson incident on West Cherry Street on November 4.

Before the Carbondale Fire Department arrived, police said Gulley evacuated the occupants from the residence and used a fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle to combat the flames.

Police said the actions of Officer Gulley, along with other officers and fire personnel, saved several lives, including children who were inside the home.

On November 4, 2025, at 11:19 p.m., Carbondale police responded to the 300 block of West Cherry Street for a possible arson. Officers reported finding a piece of furniture on fire, with flames spreading to the house.
