Mark Speakman is losing his grip on the New South Wales Liberal Party, insiders report, after Nationals leader Dugald Saunders walked away from the helm on Monday.

Mr Saunders stepped back from the party on Monday saying he made the “difficult decision” to focus on his family and himself.

Senior Liberals reportedly began discussing the next Liberals’ next leader before state parliament wraps up for the year this week.

The party’s moderate faction threw their weight behind former TV journalist and Vaucluse MP Kellie Sloane, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The right-faction has reportedly pitched Member for Wahroonga and Shadow Attorney General Alister Henskens.

Sources have suggested Mr Speakman only remains in his role on account of disagreements between the factions.
