COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four major property tax bills could hit Gov. Mike DeWine’s desk this week and reshape how every Ohio homeowner pays for schools, police and parks next year.

These bills represent “the most impactful legislation probably in the last 50 years, maybe in the last 80 or 90 years,” Rep. Bill Roemer, a Summit County Republican, said.

The four-bill package would change how taxes rise when property values go up, let officials cut back levies that bring in “too much money,” and overhaul how schools collect local taxes.

But lawmakers must move quickly if they want those changes on next year’s tax bills. County treasurers say it’s already too late to change January’s bills, and the window to affect June is closing.
