PORTAGE, Wis. (WMTV) -Local law enforcement and mail carriers say this time of year brings a spike in package theft, and this year will likely not be any different.
Doorbell camera footage from Portage shows a person stealing packages from a front porch. While the “porch pirate” name is creative, the action is a criminal offense that becomes more popular heading into holiday shopping season.
“In years past like many other communities, we have had the rash of thefts, and it falls around the holidays,” said Portage Police Department lieutenant Ben Nuemann.
Nuemann said that while package theft is frustrating, preventing pirates is possible.
“Our goal is to be proactive with the community members to keep that from happening,” he said.
