MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Maryville police officer underwent surgery and remains hospitalized after a crash during Vice President J.D. Vance’s security motorcade Friday, with community members providing critical aid at the scene.
Officer Justin Brown was seriously injured when his police motorcycle collided with a state trooper’s car near Merrit Road on East Lamar Alexander Parkway, according to Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp.

Dan Varady, who lives near the crash site, was among several people who immediately responded to help Brown.
“My thoughts were I had to help this man, that’s it,” Varady said.
