A key commuter bridge connecting Perth's inner southern suburbs with the CBD will remain closed until at least Wednesday evening after lighting cables fell from the structure.

Boorloo Bridge, which links Victoria Park with Point Fraser in Perth's CBD, is popular with cyclists and pedestrians and opened with much fanfare less than a year ago.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said about 70 metres of casing wrapped around the electrical lighting cables attached to the bridge broke away and fell into the Swan River around 5pm on Monday.

"The fastening didn't hold," she told ABC Radio Perth.

"The team have been out overnight checking all the fastenings and also putting in extra fastenings to make sure the casing around the cable doesn't break away again."
