WASHINGTON — Police say an MPD officer shot and killed a man in Northeast Monday night after a foot chase near the Deanwood Metro station.

The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. in the 1200 block of 47th Place NE, according to Executive Assistant Chief Andre Wright. Officers from the Sixth District and the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force were patrolling the area after residents raised concerns about gunfire at a community meeting the night before.

Wright said officers spotted a man with a gun tucked into his waistband. When they got out of their cruiser to make contact, the man ran. One MPD officer chased him on foot, repeatedly ordering him to stop, Wright said.

The officer eventually caught up with the man, and a struggle followed. Wright said the officer gave “multiple commands”
