Victoria's top cop has for the first time visited the High Country property where two police officers were shot dead while serving a warrant to so-called sovereign citizen Dezi Freeman in one of the darkest days in the police force's history.

Victoria Police chief commissioner Mike Bush today paid his respects at the Porepunkah property where Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart and Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson were gunned down nearly three months ago.

Bush arrived in Porepunkah, 310km north-east of Melbourne, yesterday to support local police officers at Bright Police Station, where the taskforce dedicated to finding the fugitive is based.
