CLEVELAND, Ohio — Biswanath Halder, who was convicted in the 2003 shooting spree at Case Western Reserve University, died Monday while serving a life sentence.

A spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction confirmed Halder, 85, died of apparent natural causes at the Franklin Medical Center in Columbus.

He had been incarcerated at Pickaway Correctional Institution before being moved to the prison’s medical facility. The official cause of death will be determined upon receipt of the death certificate.

Halder, a former graduate student at Case, carried out a seven-hour siege inside the Peter B. Lewis Building on May 9, 2003. Armed with a semiautomatic rifle and dressed in military gear, he killed 30-year-old MBA student Norman Wallace and wounded two others.
