A grim incident unfolded in South Kolkata's Kudghat area as Jamuna Mondal, 67, succumbed to severe burns after reportedly setting herself on fire. Her despair was linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, according to police reports.
Mondal's family revealed that her anxiety intensified as the SIR process began, fueled by the absence of her enumeration form. She tragically took the drastic step at her home before being rushed to MR Bangur Hospital, where she succumbed.
This incident is part of a concerning trend, with similar reports emerging from districts such as North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Birbhum, and Nadia. The Election Commission's SIR initiative aims for thorough voter roll verification, but has inadvertently caused distress among citizens.
