Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has rejected accusations of bias against Manchester United from Anthony Taylor, as the quality of refereeing in the top flight was brought into the spotlight.

The Cheshire referee was appointed as the official for United's encounter against Liverpool last year, casting fresh light on the 47-year-old's association in the North West. Taylor supports Altrincham , of the National League, and grew up in the town, which led to some complaints regarding his appointment for matches involving both United and Manchester City .

At the time of his appointment for last season's United vs Liverpool game, ex-Premier League referee Keith Hackett said: "I do not understand why Anthony Taylor has been given the Liverpool game against Manchester U
