(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back every day at ‘This Day In History.’
On this date in 1928, Walt Disney released “Steamboat Willie,” the first animated film with synchronized sound to feature the iconic Mickey Mouse.
The black-and-white cartoon was a massive hit, making Mickey an instant icon and launching Disney’s animation empire.
“Steamboat Willie” marked Mickey and Minnie’s public debut, driven by Walt’s vision for sound in film.
Over 90 years, Mickey’s look and personality have evolved from his early days to his iconic red shorts and gloves.
Today, Mickey Mouse remains Disney’s global ambassador.
As Walt Disney himself once said, “it was all started by a mouse.”
