James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have "sworn a blood oath" to make at least one more Alita: Battle Angel movie.

The Titanic filmmaker co-wrote and produced the 2019 sci-fi action film, and was attached as the director for many years of development before giving the job to Rodriguez because he was too busy with the Avatar franchise.

While Cameron still has his hands full with Avatar, he and Rodriguez are determined to tell more of Alita's story in the future.

"I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans," Cameron told Empire magazine. "Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we're thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we'll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we're making progress on that."

The Aliens filmmaker then revealed that he and the Sin City director will be getting "more serious about that" once he completes post-production on his third Avatar film, Fire and Ash.

"Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from (Robert's) place, I think we'll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix here in a few weeks," he shared.

Cameron will release Avatar: Fire and Ash on 19 December. Two more sequels are in various stages of production and are expected to keep the filmmaker busy until 2031.

Based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series Battle Angel Alita, the film follows a cyborg who awakens in a new body without memory of her past and sets out to uncover her destiny. Rosa Salazar played Alita via motion capture alongside Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali and Ed Skrein.
