TRAVERSE CITY — Tanya McClendon has been through a lot. Her 27-year-old son, who she says became addicted to opioids following a motorcycle accident several years back, died of an overdose Oct. 27. She and her husband had already been taking care of his two children, now ages 7 and 3.

So when Nita Nowland-Wilson came along with a care package of homemade soup, garlic bread and dessert, it was nourishing — in more ways than one.
