Respiratory failure is a condition that occurs when there isn't enough oxygen or too much carbon dioxide in the body, most commonly in the lungs, and can either happen all at once (acute) or during a long period of time (chronic), according to the Cleveland Clinic . Ladd was reported to have suffered from interstitial lung disease for years prior to her death, with esophageal dysmotility listed as a significant factor on the death certificate.
