The 31-year-old Connecticut man accused of stabbing his father to death inside a Farmington home over the weekend had recently completed probation for a previous violent attack, authorities said at his arraignment.
Joshua Popielarczyk, 31, is charged with the murder of his father, 62-year-old David Popielarczyk, at David's Birch Street home on Friday, Nov. 14, Farmington police said. Officers were called to the home around 4 p.m., where they found David dead on the living room floor with multiple stab wounds.
Joshua was arrested Saturday evening, police said.
Authorities have not released a motive, but Joshua Popielarczyk has a documented history of violence, according to court records.
He was accused of trying to strangle someone on Sept. 11, 2023, and was later convicted of third-degree strangulation/suffocation in 2024, records show. That case also involved domestic violence, but did not involve his father, CT Insider reported, citing Avon police.
Popielarczyk received an 11-month suspended sentence and two years of probation, records show. His probation ended early, in September 2025.
State prosecutors referenced the prior conviction during his arraignment on Monday, Nov. 17.
It’s unclear why he did not serve the full probationary term, but authorities said they were reviewing the circumstances, according to reports from the arraignment.
A judge ordered Popielarczyk held on a $3 million bond, authorities said.
He is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 2.
Farmington police say the investigation into David Popielarczyk’s killing is ongoing.
