The Met Office has issued an amber snow warning for parts of the UK, predicting significant snowfall and freezing temperatures. The warning, which is in effect for much of Thursday, indicates that areas such as the North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire Wolds could see accumulations of up to 25 cm (10 inches) of snow. This amber alert is accompanied by multiple yellow weather warnings for snow and ice, which are expected to cause travel disruptions and power cuts across various regions. The warnings are in place for today and will extend into Wednesday and Thursday. Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong stated, "Cold Arctic air from the north is firmly in charge of the UK’s weather, bringing the first notable cold snap of this autumn and giving an early taste of winter weather." He added that winter hazards, particularly snow and ice, are likely to pose risks in the coming days, with the coldest conditions anticipated on Wednesday and Thursday. The amber warning covers North East England, including Redcar and Cleveland, as well as Yorkshire and Humber, specifically the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. Armstrong noted that while not all areas will experience lying snow, frequent wintry showers could lead to accumulations of 2-5 cm in some places, with higher ground in Scotland potentially seeing 15-20 cm. In addition to the amber warning, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber cold health alert for the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and the Humber regions. This alert is aimed at protecting vulnerable populations from the effects of the cold weather. A yellow alert for snow and ice is also in effect from 8pm today until 9pm tomorrow for parts of Scotland, warning of frequent snow showers. Areas affected include Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, Orkney & Shetland, and Strathclyde. The Met Office has warned that travel delays and disruptions may occur due to the expected snow. Gusty winds could lead to blizzard conditions in some areas, further complicating travel and safety. As the week progresses, the weather is expected to remain cold, with additional yellow warnings for snow and ice in place across various regions, including Northern Ireland, parts of Wales, and northern and southwestern England. By Friday, conditions are expected to improve, with milder temperatures and drier weather forecasted for many areas. However, rain is anticipated to return over the weekend, potentially bringing further wet and windy conditions. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather warnings and take precautions against icy conditions, particularly on untreated roads and pavements.
