The St. Albert RCMP detachment has upgraded their emergency call system, transitioning to the Next-Generation 911 system which provides first responders with more detailed and accurate caller locations.

The new technology allows for improved service and new safety features. Callers do not need to do anything different than before. If help is needed, dial 9-1-1 to connect with an emergency dispatcher.

911’s previous system relied on the caller’s distance to the closest cell tower, with triangulation then used to determine an approximate location of the call. This system was faulty and could often give results up to 50 kilometres from where the call was originating from.
