A Hackensack driver and a Hasbrouck Heights police officer were both hospitalized when the 64-year-old civilian ran a red light and struck the officer's police vehicle early Tuesday, Nov. 18, authorities said.

The crash happened around 5 a.m., when the Hasbrouck Heights communications center received a radio call from an officer reporting being involved in an accident at the intersection of Franklin and Terrace Avenue, Hasbrouck Heights Lt. John Behr said.

Officers arrived and found two vehicles with serious damage, police said. Both drivers were alert and conscious.

The Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department, Holy Name BLS, Wood-Ridge Police, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office responded. The officer and the driver of the second vehicle were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with “believed non-life-threatening injuries.”

A review of the officer’s in-car dash camera showed the officer “having a green light and the second vehicle failing to stop at the red light, entering the intersection and colliding with the police vehicle,” police said.

The crash is being investigated by the Hasbrouck Heights Traffic Division. Summonses are expected for the other driver, identified as a 64-year-old male from Hackensack, according to Behr.
