Waterloo city council has quietly approved a pay hike of 32 per cent, as well as municipal pensions, for the next council to be elected in October 2026.

Part-time council pay will increase to $58,463 from $44,257.

Council approved the pay increase Monday without comment or dissent as a routine item packaged with other housekeeping matters.

“Our councillors work really hard,” Mayor Dorothy McCabe said in a later interview.

“It’s listed as a part-time job, but I know most of them certainly put in many, many more hours,” she said. “To encourage other people to run for office, it needs to be a reasonable rate of pay.”
