Sarnia could be reducing development charges further still.
Council Monday considered a staff recommendation to reduce Development Area 2 homebuilding fees 17 per cent, and fees elsewhere in the city 12 per cent, based on negotiations between city staff and developers, and infrastructure grant funding .

On top of that, Coun. George Vandenberg called for reducing Development Area 2 charges – currently $43,000 for single-detached residential in the 570-hectare development zone in the city’s east – another 50 per cent for about a year.
The aim is to spur more homebuilding and grow the local tax base, Vandenberg said.
Sarnia has higher development charges than those in neighbouring municipalities, where more homebuilding is happening, Vandenberg said.
