(WKYT) — For today’s Good Question, Tracy asks: Is it legal for businesses in Kentucky to round up when they run out of pennies?
Yes, it probably is. There could be a local ordinance preventing that, but there is no statewide law in Kentucky regulating how retailers must round when it comes to cash transactions.
There are laws in some states saying customers paying cash cannot be charged more than customers paying by card. In those states, retailers are having to round all transactions the same. But Kentucky is not one of those states.
Federal legislation proposed
A bill known as the Common Cents Act has been introduced in the U.S. House. It would require cash transactions be rounded to the nearest five cents.
Amounts ending in 1, 2, 6, 7 would be rounded down. Amounts ending in 3, 4
