On Nov. 18, 1978, 909 members of the Peoples Temple cult, led by Reverend Jim Jones, committed mass suicide at Jonestown, their Guyana-based settlement. Additional victims, including the late California Rep. Leo Ryan, were killed by Peoples Temple members at the nearby Port Kaituma airstrip and at a Peoples Temple property offsite, bringing the total number of victims to 918. Temple members who died at the settlement, some of whom were infants, consumed cyanide-laced juice at the command of Jones in an act of 'revolutionary suicide.' Take a look back at Jim Jones leading the Peoples Temple and how the tragic massacre unfolded.
