Paul W. Valentine, who covered Baltimore for The Washington Post and earlier reported on the Civil Rights movement, died of prostate cancer Oct. 15 at Stella Maris Hospice. He was 90 and lived in Roland Park.

Born in Durham, North Carolina, he attended The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and earned a degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the Army and reported for the Columbia South Carolina Record and The Atlanta Journal before joining The Washington Post in 1965. He retired in 1998.

He covered both the Civil Rights movement and the anti-Vietnam War movement. The night of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. he was assigned to Memphis, Tennessee, and wrote extensively of event.

Paul W. Valentine enjoyed playing the autoharp and guitar.
