HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - A proposed deal to buy the Aquarion Water Company has come under fire.

Connecticut’s Attorney General calls the deal “atrocious.”

The Regional Water Authority wants to buy Aquarion for almost $2.5 billion.

Republican lawmakers along with town leaders say the deal will create a lot of debt which they say will be passed along not only to customers but property owners as well.

Aquarion provides water for 800,000 customers in 59 towns.

Opponents say the sale could lead to higher water bills and less state oversight.

“In this case, RWA is assuming a massive loan essentially to take on Aquarion. But they are not paying for it. They are not taking on the debt, they are putting that onto the backs of rate payers and the property taxpayers,” Francis Pickering of the W
