When the news came out in October that people receiving federal food assistance would not get those benefits in November due to the government shutdown, many people swung into action.

Businesses across Portland pledged to feed people who needed it, and quickly, individuals responded by donating to those businesses.

Perhaps the most successful campaign came from a volunteer-run, nonprofit Portland coffee shop that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in a week.

“I legitimately thought we would get a couple hundred dollars,” Heretic Coffee owner Josh White told The Oregonian at the time .

By the end of the first day, White said, they had more than $10,000.

Many of the donations have been small, even as small as $1.17, he said, and from across the world.
