CARMEL, Ind. — The Carmel City Council has passed new restrictions on the use of e-bikes within city limits.
The ordinance puts new speed limits for cyclists on streets, sidewalks and trails ranging from 15 mph to 35 mph.
Anyone on an electric bike will also need to leave at least 3 feet of space between them and anyone else. Fines for violating the ordinance could be as much as $250.
An electric bike is a type of bike that has a battery and electric motor built in. The motor is meant to make pedaling easier, though some have a throttle that lets them run without pedaling.
