Frustrated with a perceived lack of action from Niagara Region on the homelessness crisis, St. Catharines city council is calling on the province to create legislation that would allow the city to provide services and bill the Region.
Dubbed the “Do Your Job Act” by Mayor Mat Siscoe, council’s proposed “Regional Social Services Responsibility Act” legislation would give lower-tier municipalities options if they believe upper tiers aren’t fulfilling their mandates.
“We are in a crisis situation when it comes to homelessness, opioid addictions and mental health, and at least in the offering of shelter and housing in homelessness services, those fall under the responsibility of the Region,” said Siscoe, who made a motion for action Monday night.
