Former Michigan forward Johnny Beecher is getting a fresh start.
The Calgary Flames claimed the 2019 first-round pick off waivers from the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. Calgary is in last place in the NHL with a 5-12-3 record, giving it the first opportunity at claiming Beecher.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder has never been a major point producer at the NCAA or pro level, but profiled as a bottom-six center who can thrive on the penalty kill with his size and speed.
After recording three goals and eight assists in 78 games for the Bruins last season – his first full year in the NHL – Beecher was off to a slow start in 2025-26. He has been a frequent healthy scratch, appearing in just six games and registering one goal while averaging 10:24 of ice time.
