NISQUALLY INDIAN COMMUNITY, Wash. — The Nisqually Tribe said it will not house detainees for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after revealing that a staff member had been communicating with federal officials.
Chairman E.K. Choke said a staff member was communicating with ICE without consulting the Tribal Council. In a release, the tribe said it has no current agreements or contracts and no plans to enter into any related to housing ICE detainees.
Choke also said denying the request was in line with the tribe's values of treating all individuals with dignity, respect and compassion.
“The Nisqually people are not in favor of, nor will the Tribal Council allow, the detention of individuals by ICE on our reservation or in our facilities,” Choke said in a release.
