Epcor is asking Edmontonians to take part in World Toilet Day on Wednesday by being more responsible about household items that are flushed down the toilet.

Crews answered 159 calls in 2024 from customers dealing with sewer backups in their homes or businesses, Epcor said In a Tuesday news release. Of those, more than 70 per cent were linked to people trying to flush non-flushable items. This is despite the routine inspection and high-pressure flushing of city sewer pipes to remove fat, oil, grease, and non-flushable items.

“Flushing responsibly helps prevent costly home plumbing repairs and protects the infrastructure we all depend on,” said Abhishek Bhargava, EPCOR’s senior manager of system operations, in the release.
