KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - On Tuesday, the Wyandotte County detention officer accused of killing Charles Adair made his first court appearance via Zoom.

On July 5, 2025, 50-year-old Charles Adair passed away while in custody at the Wyandotte County Jail.
Court records show that 32-year-old Richard Fatherley, a detention officer at the jail, allegedly kneeled on Adair’s back for more than a minute.

Adair died from his injuries. It wasn’t until September that Fatherley was charged with unintentional, but reckless, second-degree murder.
His first court appearance was set for November 18.
