LISBON, Ohio - On Tuesday William Long entered a courtroom at the Columbiana County Common Pleas Court as attorneys prepared to argue over a crucial piece of evidence that could influence the trial.
Prosecutors asserted that a software called Trax placed Long's cellphone near the location where his ex-wife, former Leetonia teacher Michelle Long, was shot dead at her home in Butler Township.
In contrast, the defense requested that the cell phone data be dismissed. To support their argument, they called a digital forensics expert to the stand, who explained that the software is considered "junk science" and has not gained acceptance in the scientific community.
The expert even mentioned having encountered similar concerns on a podcast.
