Tuesday represented the deadline for the Pirates to add prospects to their 40-man roster in advance of next month’s Rule 5 draft.
They celebrated in a sizable way, adding a surprisingly high six players and undergoing more heavy-duty roster shuffling.
First, those whose contracts were selected: outfielder/first baseman Esmerlyn Valdez; infielder Jack Brannigan; right-handed pitchers Wilber Dotel, Antwone Kelly and Brandan Bidois; and left-hander Tyler Samaniego.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated relievers Colin Holderman and Dauri Moreta for assignment, as well as outfielders Ronny Simon and Alexander Canario. The Post-Gazette previously reported that Cam Devanney will pursue opportunities in Japan.
