A 27-year-old man was charged with murder Monday in California in connection with the shooting death of former Laney College football coach John Beam, who starred in Netflix’s “Last Chance U” series.
Cedric Irving Jr. also faces a separate charge of a gun enhancement, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Irving was taken into custody by authorities in Oakland, California, on Friday, one day after Beam was shot on Laney’s campus in Oakland.
Beam, the athletic director at Laney College who retired from coaching last year, died of his injuries on Friday. He was 66.
If convicted, Irving could be sentenced to 50 years to life, according to Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson, AP reports.
