GREENLAND -- Greenland voters rejected a proposed annexation measure in Tuesday's special election.
Complete but unofficial vote totals were:
For^47 (41%)
Against^67 (59%)
Mayor Jim Renfrow said the annexation was meant to "square up" city boundaries and bring an area where growth is expected into the city. He said a bill passed by the state Legislature earlier this year removed the planning jurisdiction cities had formerly been able to exercise over areas adjacent to the city.
Renfrow said the area included in the annexation proposal is "almost an island" and can only be accessed by city streets. Greenland borders the annexation area on the north, east and west sides; Greenland police and fire services respond to calls in the area now, he said.
