A Jersey City Police sergeant and former mayor of a Bergen County town was arrested Monday after he was accused of sexually assaulting a child he met through social media, authorities said.

Former Dumont Mayor Andrew LaBruno, 44, was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday.

LaBruno, a Democrat, recently ran for a state Assembly seat in the 39th District. He and Donna Abene were narrowly defeated in the Nov. 4 election by Republicans John Azzariti and Robert Auth.
