WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) — A Winchester police captain received recognition from city officials Tuesday after helping a 12-year-old student with autism return safely to school when the child wandered away from campus.

Captain Steve Charles, a 12-year veteran of the Winchester Police Department, was at Baker Intermediate School for a mentor program when he spotted the child running from the school grounds. Charles followed the nonverbal student and safely escorted him back to school administrators.

The child’s mother, Courtney Coslett, requested the city honor Charles for his actions. She said her son Max is prone to wandering due to his cognitive condition.
