ELLIJAY, Ga. — A school resource officer deputy in Gilmer County has been struck by a vehicle, according to a social media post by the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office.
The incident happened on Highway 5 South, near Legion Road and Bobcat Trail, while the SRO deputy was directing traffic, according to the sheriff's office.
According to Georgia State Patrol, the incident happened just before 2:50 p.m. An 80-year-old driver, GSP said, hit the 54-year-old school resource officer.
Captain Frank Copeland from the Gilmer County Sheriff's Office told 11Alive that the deputy was transported to a hospital. Sheriff Nicholson also confirmed that the deputy suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but he is in a "significant" amount of pain and was admitted for further care.
