MINOT — "Julie, respectfully, she's a very nice person," Alex Balazs told me in a phone conversation Tuesday evening, Nov. 18. "She's very technical, she's very smart. I've hired people like her. But I don't think she's who should be representing us in Washington."

Balazs was one of five candidates seeking the North Dakota Republican Party's nomination for the U.S. House last election cycle. He won the party's endorsement at the state convention, though that was a bit of a fluke. Former lawmaker Rick Becker was also seeking the nomination, but because party rules prohibited him from seeking the NDGOP's convention endorsement, he encouraged his supporters among the convention delegates to disrupt the proceedings by purposefully spoiling their ballots.
