The thousands of workers employed in Scotland’s once booming oil and gas sectors were promised a just transition as the country moved away from fossil fuel production. ‌

Renewables were hailed as the future and successive SNP first ministers have promised there would be jobs galore in the industry. ‌

The UK Labour Government has also be keen to stress a bright new dawn for the North Sea and the thousands of highly-skilled and well-paid workers who have made a living from it. ‌

But there’s been precious little sign of any real strategy to make that a reality.

The latest example arrived yesterday when US energy giant ExxonMobil announced it was pulling the plug at its ethylene plant at Mossmorran in Fife.
